<![CDATA[[ANSWERED] Movie Player Frequency Bands on macOS Catalina and Newer]]>Hi - has anyone had any issue with the Frequency bands on the Movie Player not working?

I've opened an old patch on a different machine and they seem to be 'stuck' - generating nothing. I can only suspect it's something to do with the machine (iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), Catalina

When I open the patch on my laptop, it works fine!

I have tried:

  • versions 3.0.7, 3.0.8, and 3.1.1 - no joy
  • bringing new movie players into scene, adding freq bands and setting to interactive
  • turning off Adobe Creative Cloud and restarting isadora


any clues greatly appreciated - you can download the patch /  media and have a play here

The modification to look at as an alternative is using Live Capture to route audio through Frequency Analysis and the Frequency Bands actor. When using a sound file from the Media Bin, this means using a pass-thru virtual sound input like Blackhole, Soundflower, Loopback or similar 3rd party audio software to route the audio source to the Live Capture functions.

Yes, I use High Sierra on my laptop, which must be why that still works. The iMac i'm teaching on is Catalina. I hadn't realised that the Frequency bands was tied in with Quicktime and it's depreciation - that's a bummer, but at least I know now!

I need to find some other ways for my students to make some sound reactive patches ideally.

This feature remains in place to allow older patches to be opened and up dated, but the Frequency bands will not work since they relied on QuickTime.

Frequency bands through the Movie Player became obsolete with MAC OS changes to Quicktime. The Movieplayer implementation of Frequency Bands is only functional with legacy Mac operating systems. "Starting with macOS Catalina, QuickTime 7 applications, image, audio and video codecs will no longer be compatible with macOS or supported by Apple."
