      Hello everyone,

I'm trying to link isadora on two remote machines, to syphon a video feed from one to another - and back again. i know its possible if both machines are on the same LAN, using a TCP Syphon setup, but what if the machines are in different buildings in the same city? is there a way of creating a virtual LAN over the net? or do i need to use something like Skype to be able to share video streams?

      any ideas?

      John

The NAT, translation and buffering will not let you use any VPN or virtual LAN. Skype or some streaming service will be your best yet. Streaming services will work pretty well with good internet but you will most likely need a dedicated machine for the encode as it is not efficient. There are some hardware solutions from AXIS and a professional skype hardware box, or even one of the terradeck encoders with a streaming address (just dont make it public) and grab the stream on the other side.

I guess that NDI will do that, but Isadora does not support this yet. https://www.newtek.com/ndi/

@Michel I've been using the SyphontoNDI app which is a good way to use Isadora and NDI

...there's a rumour that SoundJack is being developed to include video. it seems like this is a near-future thing.

i've spoken to a friend who is an IT specialist - he suggested a solution that involves setting up something inside a router and using external IPs, which seems like it might work, but, in the context of this installation, I don't have access to the routers, so i think I'm going to have to use an online conferencing solution. When I've experimented with Skype and Isadora before, I found that dealing with the connection using hardware was producing better results than a software solution using CamTwist.

NDI.Cloud is in open beta, and I've found that it works pretty well. I've used it cross-platform with no issue, though they say that it runs better in Mac OS. There are spout/syphon to NDI plugins you can use to get the video stream into it, and I'd recommend using something like Hamachi to set up a tunnel/VPN between your computers. I'm using it to try and replace a video-conference link for a show. I wish I'd done more testing to tell you about, but so far so good. I haven't found a good way to get audio from Isadora into the NDI stream, but I might use VBAN to do a separate audio stream.

@mwasser - thanks for the information - it looks like this might be a good option - i shall investigate your links and report back. i use SoundJack for realtime audio - its worth checking out if you want a low-latency, high quality audio stream to a specific IP.
