3D Player with .3ds from Vectorworks
-
Has anyone had any success using the 3D player actor with models exported using the export .3ds function in Vectorworks? I'm not having much success and I'm not sure why. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a copy of 3DS Max to help with the troubleshooting process.

Dear Matthew,
Send me some example files; I use Cheetah3D (inexpensive, easy to use). I'll open them there to see what they look like, and also take a look in Isadora.Best Wishes,Mark -
thanks Mark - Cheetah3D looks good - i tried to edit an object with 3D Studio Max but it was expensive and difficult to use. i think i'll give this one a go...

Yeah, I like Cheetah3D too because its an "Isadora-like" operation -- the company seems to be one-person or maybe two or three; the customer service is personal and the interface is very friendly if you a Mac type like me. I use it quite a bit, and you can actually do pretty sophisticated stuff if you want to learn how to do it.
Best Wishes,Mark -
Cheetah 3D looks interesting. I'm going to check that out. I have been planning to pick up Cinema 4D and I probably still will but that might be a useful bridge while I work up the energy to spend $1600 on C4D.

Dear Matthew,
Do you nevertheless want to send me one of these Vectorworks models so I can have a go?Best Wishes,Mark -
I'll give it a shot in Cheetah 3D myself and if I can't figure it out I'll send it your way.
Thanks,Matthew -
So it all looks fine in Cheetah3D but the model just doesn't show up in Isadora. I suspect this has something to do with my not understanding how texturing works but if you could check out the model that would be awesome. I'll send you an email with it.
Thanks,Matthew -
@MatthewH
also worth looking at is the opensource software blender.org, it is complicated to get started but there are a lot of free video tutorials and you can do really awsum stuff with it.Best,

I am familiar with blender but I already know C4D and Cheetah3D is similar to that in terms of UI whereas blender is completely different. If I had to do it again I might have learned Blender to begin with but I didn't and I don't want to try and completely relearn now.
