macOS 10.15 - Catalina

Dear All,

Well, seems like we got the all 64-bit Isadora 3 ready in the nick of time. At the Apple's World Wide Developer Conference today they announced macOS 10.15 "Catalina" which does what we _thought_ was going to happen with Mojave. From this article:

"When you install macOS 10.15, your older 32-bit apps will cease to work at all."

So, while Isadora 3 still supports QuickTime playback on macOS 10.14 and earlier, it will not be able to do so once you upgrade to Catalina because QuickTime is a 32-bit library.

In the fall, when Catalina debuts, we should have a nice party to celebrate this venerable piece of code that did so much for us for so many years.

What does this mean for Isadora video stage capture on the Mac platform going forward? Is there a way to work with HAP and HAP alpha on the Mac Isadora 3 release? 

We have gone from a lot of familiar codec variations on Mac to almost none in one Isadora version step.

Well, the bottom line is that Windows Media Foundation and Direct Show do not offer the variety that QuickTime offers. That's why it's such a bummer to lose it... not just on Windows, but on Mac OS as well. AVFoundation on Mac only offers four codecs for recording. On Windows, we have more options, but some of them are pretty old. 

There's not much one can do about this. I've gone over my legal concerns with FFmpeg in other posts. So, with QuickTime out of the picture, what we have left what Apple and Microsoft give us with AVFoundation, Windows Media Foundation and Direct Show.
