Using Game Controllers - Out of Range?

Hello All.

Another noob question here... if wanting to use a Wii or PS3 wireless controller for note on/off or otherwise, must the actual PS3 / Wii be within wireless range of izzy and the specific controller?

I am trying to use OSCulator with the wii-mote and/or my ps3 controller, but my console system is out of range of my computer - and both controllers end up turning themselves off.

As always, your input is appreciated.

 We had a go with extending the range of Wii (bluetooth).
