Hi,

I thought there may be some value in sharing this patch with anyone interested in working with Open Access API data in Isadora. There is a lot more that can be done with it and this might start an interesting conversation.

In this demonstration patch the latest images from NASA's Mars Rovers and the DSCOVR spacecraft are intended to be displayed each day that the patch is opened and reopened. The images are made available through Public Access API's and displayed to the stage with a custom (apologies but Mac only!) FreeFrame plugin that is available in this package along with the Isadora patch file: NASA-Open-Access-Example

The FreeFrame plugin is a prototype generated by VUO software and is therefore limited to Mac OS compatibility and appears bloated in file size. Instructions to install the plugin in the Isadora FreeFrame folder are here. And for opening in Mac OS here. This is not ideal and it would be great to have a cross platform and optimised module for displaying URL images in Isadora - feature request here.

The EPIC API provides information on the daily imagery collected by DSCOVR's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) instrument. Uniquely positioned at the Earth-Sun Lagrange point, EPIC provides full disc imagery of the Earth and captures unique perspectives of certain astronomical events such as lunar transits using a 2048x2048 pixel CCD (Charge Coupled Device) detector coupled to a 30-cm aperture Cassegrain telescope.

Mars Rover Photos API is designed to collect image data gathered by NASA's Curiosity, Opportunity, and Spirit rovers on Mars and make it more easily available to other developers, educators, and citizen scientists. This API is maintained by Chris Cerami.

Each rover has its own set of photos stored in the database, which can be queried separately. There are several possible queries that can be made against the API. Photos are organized by the sol (Martian rotation or day) on which they were taken, counting up from the rover's landing date. A photo taken on Curiosity's 1000th Martian sol exploring Mars, for example, will have a sol attribute of 1000. If instead you prefer to search by the Earth date on which a photo was taken, you can do that too.

The following examples represent additional historical news headlines I have added for my own project. They are from the Guardian API with filters for Science/Mars and Environment. These additional layers have been stripped from the demonstration patch due to the need for a unique authentication key.

The NASA epic camera provides most recent and historic full disk images of the Earth from the DSCOVR spacecraft.

The NASA Mars Rover images provides the most recent and historic images including those from the Perseverance Rover.

I will agree with you for the feature request and would add the possibility to display GIF and video URL
