I reformulate here a request than I made some time ago in an other thread: getting a way to avoid color banding.

Indeed, Motion blur, on some textures, makes 'spots', that is 'colour banding':

It is possible to avoid such color banding e.g. in Max/Jitter just by forcing textures from 'char' to 'float32'.

I presume it is possible to offer the possibility for Isadora's Motion Blur to do something similar.

      Many thanks!

Best wishes to all in these difficult times!

At this time Isadora uses 8bit video textures. This means the values are on the range of 0-255, and floating point is not supported. We hope to offer higher bit depth image processing in a future release.
Only recently have high performance codecs become available/popular for live 10bit video, so we are looking into these options as well.
These are priority features as we move forward.

Hello, I wonder if there has been any progress on this subject matter (avoiding color banding)? I am very much dependant in my work of higher quality blurs (10 bits etc) and this is really preventing me to use Isadora as I would like...

          Many thanks!

          Best wishes,

Hi jbb, my feeling is that it doesn’t need to be a 10bit Pipeline to avoid colorbanding.

For me it is much more how the motion blur actor works with your footage and if there are rounding issues in the motion blur actor that interpolate the color information into this blobs.

People sometimes used artificial noise to trick the banding with mpeg 2 compression.

Perhaps this could be a way, to “enrich” the picture, so the actor doesn’t break it down to one color.

The display devices even today, often only work with 8bit or 8bith+dithering.

              Hello Clemens,

Thank you for your suggestions and comments.

You are right, it depends from the footage: sometimes it can be more or less acceptable, but most of the times it it not, unfortunately.

I actually do some sort of dithering using various types of noises (sometimes with the Shimmer actor), but that does not work all the times and on everything; one cannot achieve the same type of results as motion blurs in After Effects or even in Jitter, or what one could do in the past with Trails in GPU with Isadora 2.6, or TimeBlur in CPU, etc. Without speaking of the good old Wave from Peter Warden.

              Best wishes,

              jbb
