I've been meaning to post for a while, and just saw the awesome news regards the streaming features of izzy 3.1 - congratulations and well done everyone - it's a huge step.

It blows my mind how much izzy has evolved to accomodate more and more sophisticated applications and performance (ive been using is since 2007 i think). However, as I use it for teaching a lot, I often approach it from the perspective of my students who come to it fresh - ie - what is the quickest way I can make something visually interesting? I still use izzy in a very basic way myself!

I miss many of the video effects that were compatible in earlier versions  (this may be many of the freefame fx) both from a personal artistic perspective (i wrote about my love of dither) but especially from a teaching perspective - students enjoy a palette of effects that are fairly self-explanatory.

I know there are GLSL actors and code snippets that can be found with some hunting, but I must admit, I don't fully understand these myself - code is a different language, and ultimately it takes us out of the isadora interface (which is a problem when teaching). So for me, these are an advanced concept, not a basic tool.

I know there were many dependencies on Quicktime, and I apologise if requests like this are frustrating in their ignorance of how hard it is to code bespoke visual effects actors, but I just want to advocate for the importance of simple fx actors that are self-evident in their design. I love sharing Isadora with new people, and for me these are key to that early learning process and buiding the izzy user community.

      yours, gratefull nonetheless!

ok, I apologise - most of the included effects from earlier versions ARE still present today. It's perhaps just my experience of FF fx and a couple of the key faves which disappeared.

Yes, it was a tragedy that we couldn't bring the old 32-bit FF Pete's Plugins into Isadora 3, but it simply wasn't possible unfortunately. As for removed actors, there are very few. The Isadora 3.0 release notes document the actors we needed to remove:

              • Classic External Video Output
              • Classic Movie Player Direct
              • Classic Movie Player Direct Core
              • Classic Movie Player Direct Device
              • Dither
              • Image Tile
              • Movie Player VR

Thanks Woland for all this - I appreciate the detail (and your patience). I apologise for my orginal post - I'm aware it perhaps came across as inconsiderate / ungrateful of how isadora has developed (esp given the timing).

I definitely have a cognitive distortion when it comes to what has changed! (again, perhaps because I relied so heavily on dither and Pete's FF plugins). I'm very ignorant of the technical implications and challenges of actually making tools like this - I'm just grateful to have this higher-level interface that I can make work in and share with students.

anyway - I am really excited to try out 3.1 and test the direct stream to youtube. In fact its something I may be able to integrate into my next exhibition in a couple of weeks!

                thanks again

No need to apologize. We're as sad as you are that we couldn't port over Dither and Pete's FF Plugins. It's also a good reminder for us that these plugins are missed and that, at some point when we have the time, we might want to try to re-create them as actors or GLSL Shaders.

@Videosmith I just want to add that you can add 200+ video effects by grabbing the ISF bundle from https://github.com/Vidvox/ISF-... and running Marks script to convert them for Isadora.
Download the script from this forum thread: https://community.troikatronix...
Read the read me first! The script can do all the work for you as long as everything is in the right place.
