I would love a LiDar receiver actor.

It would be amazing for interactivity in many scenarios. They are not cheap £800+ but very responsive and industry grade. Notch currently supports a few models:

Has there been any movement or development on this subject of a LiDAR actor?

I have received funding for a new project that will include the use of LiDAR for an interactive component.  I am in the stages of researching current product lines and available technologies and interfaces.  I have seen the discussion about the use of the Intel L515 camera on this forum - our research shows that that camera won't work for our needs.

I'll have a small team to work on development but I want to make sure I fully understand what is currently available (LiDAR/Izzy) before proceeding.

Anybody else doing any kind of LiDAR based development with Izzy?

            Hi,

There is an app- Zig Sim Pro -that functions with access to the LiDAR built in to iOS devices that have them. Here is a review of the app: https://cdm.link/2021/01/make-that-iphone-a-futuristic-tricorder-pocket-kinect-zig-sim-touchdesigner/

It uses Apple’s ARKit, NDI, OSC and JSON. Therefore, Lidar functionality as a direct interface with Isadora through NDI and OSC.

            Best wishes

            Russell

Thanks for the info Russell.  I could definitely see this working in a certain applications and environments.

I envision using this LiDAR tracking for onstage and large space tracking therefore, I have been looking at products that seemingly are used for robotics and automotive applications.  Some of the products I have seen seem to have limitations that make it more difficult in changing environments such as a stage (with changing lighting conditions, etc.)  or big spaces.  I have a feeling I may be developing a new interface especially since I ultimately would like to make use of Izzy for this project.

                Hi,

That sounds right. The development cost for effective onstage LiDAR tracking is likely to be higher than either of the following options. iOS LiDAR (2020-21) has a reported range of around 5 mtr compared to the Intel Realsense L515 LiDAR that is around 9 mtr. Comparing the cost of ownership (purchase cost + software) the Realsense LiDAR is more cost effective, particularly for Windows systems. If you are an apple user and have the LiDAR equiped iOS device already it is going to be a great prototyping / proof of concept tool before investing in the higher cost required to track a larger performance area.

                Best Wishes

                Russell
