Ipad os14, touchOSC and isadora 3.

hi guys,

Maybe a dumb question but how do you manage to transmit OSC values (from TouchOSC or Lemur or… on an ipadOS device) to Isadora on a mac computer via a wifi network created on the computer (ie : wifi icon on the top menu bar/create a network/)?

i use to do this everyday on every project with my ipadmini running ios 6 but the same seems not possible on ipadair3 running ipad os 14.

If my network is the one of my internet box it works (adresses are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for exemple)

If the network is created as i explained below it doesn’t (adresses are 169.254.123.123 and 169.254.22.333 for exemple)

The problem is the same with TouchOSC and Lemur

i suppose this is due to some « security »limitations on ipadOS14 but i’m quite sure there’s a way to make it works…

some help would be very appreciate

Those IP addresses are not on the same network. Your Internet box gives you 192.168.0.xx addresses. That is on the same network.

Your created networks gives you 169.254.xxx.yyy addresses. Only yyy can change, the xxx can not since then you are not on the same network.

Also the 169.254 prefix means that you are on a Automatic Private IP address range. Basically this means that your device can't find the network / can not connect to it.

When I'm back in the office tomorrow morning I will provide you with a step to step instruction on how to make this work :)

Thanks a lot, i wait for your step to step instruction…

but (and ‘cause i like to understand what i’m doing…) is there a reason why it has always worked with ios 6?

For 10 years now, i use lemur+isadora with ip like 169.254.xxx.yy for the computer and 169.254.www.zzz for the ipad and i never had any problem…

Since i get a newipad with ipadOS this setup is no longer possible.

have you controlled the OSC port? 1234 for Isadora. Perhaps it has changed in-between in Lemur.

So my setup is as follows; Mac Mini M1 (Running Big Sur, version 11.4) with Isadora 3 (Latest stable, ARM edition)

Enabling the Legacy network options

Since MacOS Big sur you have to enable the Legacy network options, to do so;

System Preferences > Network > Select your Wi-Fi service
Click Advanced
Check the checkbox called "Show Legacy network options"
Quit the advanced section
Apply your edits

Setting up the connection

From the Top bar menu we now select "Create Network" by clicking on your WiFi icon. A option called "Create Network" is now added to the menu, select this option and create your new Network.

Wait 15 seconds for the Mac to transmit this Network and verify in your Network settings or you are connected to this Network

Setting up the iPad

For this I use the legacy version of TouchOSC on an iPad with 14.7.1 installed.

Go into your WiFi Settings, Other Networks > Other. Fill in your WiFi name / Security and password if needed.
When you are connected select the Info icon on the right of the network that you just connected and turn off Private Address!
Reconnect to the WiFi if needed.
Start TouchOSC
Head over to the Menu (The dot in the right top corner)
Go to Connections > OSC
Enable the connection
Host IP address can be found in Isadora Preferences > Local IP Address
The outgoing port should be the OSC port of Isadora. Default is 1234
Head over to Isadora > Communcations > Stream Setup > Auto detect OSC Input (Check this box) and move a fader on your iPad! It should showcase you an incoming value.

well, first, thank you for your answer, i tried your workaround but it still the same…

As i said i use dayly isadora and osc device for more than 10 years and i think i’m a bit aware of how it works and this case was something very weird for me. (It should work but not)

So i’ve tried to update my ipadOS to the current version (15.2) and it resolved my issue!

Everything works as expected now.

I don’t remember wich 14.x version was on the ipad but i am now sure that it was the problem.

i’m sorry for the time you lost ‘cause i should have started by this…

And for izy users in that same case, you have to know that some IpadOS 14.x version leads to

network’s disfunctions…

Thanks for getting back to us with the solution.. Very weird.. And it was not at all to say that you aren't knowledgeable about the subject. It was more to share the process with other users that are reading this thread.

I was hoping that the Private Address option of Ipad OS was messing things up for you..

Anyhow glad that you got it to work in the end!
