Getting Black Magic Intensity to recognize iPad/iPhone mirroring, and Izzy to recognize Black Magic

hi all

has anyone had success with capturing a clean mirrored output from an iPad using the Black Magic Intensity Extreme card? (or via another route?)

there is an iPad app that involves reviewing live video that is integral to the multimedia show under development, so getting iPad mirroring to work cleanly, and getting an acceptable –ideally 720–stream into Isadora is priority.

there's latency and dropped frames from the iPad mirror send to the Intensity Extreme card.

next, possibly because it is mirrored rather than serving video, i had a lot of trouble getting a Black Magic Intensity Extreme to recognize the signal; currently i have an apple tv inline with an assigned output that the card will recognize.

the apple tv will not show up on the iPad as wired into the network, it only shows up on the iPad through wireless. so the iPad is using Airplay. (though FYI, for serving actual video, the BM rep said the iPad 4 outputs 1080p60, which the Intensity does not recognize--it only goes to 60i.)

even the signal straight out of the iPad itself has not been clean so far. whether WiFi or wired using adaptor, the iOS device (this is an iPad 4 though i have also tried 2d gen mini) seems to have a lot of trouble pushing the second screen, at least with the lightning outputs. the latency and dropout when sending live while recording within the app is even worse. the recordings themselves, within the iPad, are not as perfectly smooth as when there is no 2d screen push, but they don't reflect the long stutters in the mirror send when played back from the iPad app that recorded them.

in the iOS tech community there is a lot of talk about the mirroring send being worse with the lightning output and adaptor than the 30pin on the earlier iPads, just in terms of trying to get the output recognized at all when wired instead of WiFi.

it looks like no matter what there will be extra conversion that will downgrade the signal further.

2d part of the system: getting the stream recognized as live capture or input, and sending HD out

i'm waiting on an ok to purchase a USB license for this company. meanwhile i am using black syphon and the syphon actor and just recording off the stage on my own license, which is updated but not upgraded to 2.0. (getting black syphon to recognize the iPad required the apple tv.)

i tried to get the demo of Isadora 2 to load the Black Magic live capture and recognize the signal in, to see the difference in handling and if i could have 720p60 HD served smoothly--the way the Black Magic card can work in the 2.0 upgrade is described as taking the effort off the processor and making multiple HD streams possible with an SSD-- but i guess the demo version can't do that as a demo example: the Live Capture settings recognize there is a BM card but will not allow me to preview or successfully view/assign the stream (a window opens explaining that the upgrade is necessary to see this.)

i've been at this for a couple of weeks and the best mirroring i've gotten is still unacceptable:
has anyone had any luck with this?
is there an iPad that definitely works better for mirrored streaming than the 4 or the mini?

A long time ago I used an ipad 2 for this, It was mirrored through the 30 pin but its output was only 720p- the video looked fine and was smooth.

I think the airplay mirror seems the best way to go and a better network may give you a better signal.

There is a difference in latency when capturing with the blackmagic SDK vs quicktime, it is a little bit faster, but depending on your machine 720p should not be a problem.

I would try isolate the issue, use another source for your capturing (not the ipad via airplay) and test the quality and latency. If this is good you know your capture is good and it is the source. Next try different network configurations- do you have access to a wireless AC router, this is very fast and high bandwidth.

Last, the apple TV is a cool little device, but just to check, try do the airplay mirror with a laptop with a good GFX card, maybe the GFX processing on the apple tv needed to get the compressed signal from wifi, decompress it and display it is too much work.
