First of all, the Asus Xtion and the Kinect are both based on nearly identical internals developed by Prime Sense. Xtion isn't compatible with Macs and and doesn't really offer any advantages over the Kinect and Kinect for Windows except for a smoother integration process with consumer level products from the developer perspective.Here's the deal with Lab 254, we have some hardware that we have developed that offers significantly longer ranges using the same structured IR technology found in the Kinect and Xtion. In it's current form it works with any software that supports the Kinect and it has been used on a couple small real world installation projects. That being said there are still some kinks that need to be ironed out, specifically with the fact that it requires insanely tight manufacturing tolerances (read: super expensive) or it won't work at all. Right now, it is not at a place where we could sell it at a price point that we think will be a good fit for the needs of all but the highest budget projects. Because of that, we are at a place where we are stepping back a little bit and trying to figure out what sort of business model is going to give us the best ROI on this tech and that might not end up ever involving it being sold as a commercial product. All that said, if anyone has a particular project for which you are potentially interested in this sort of thing, please feel free to drop me a note and we can see if we can make something work.
Mark, you are right that it is a matter of time but I think it is going to be a long while before we something from a major manufacturer. Companies like PrimeSense are pretty focused on the living room and near field interactivity (museum, retail, etc) markets and my conversations with people in the know point to a few years before they even start thinking about investing in R&D efforts to increase range. Right now they are actually more concerned with decreasing range for better performance with desk bound applications. The applications other than our own that need the longer range (industrial imaging, security, robotics) tend to be better served by ToF depth imagers and, while there are definitely longer range units out there and in development that use that type of technology, they are all in the $20-50k range. -

If the no power supply thing is a big deal then the kinect for windows (as opposed to the kinect for xbox) also has this feature and as well as a better for close range sensor lense.
Close range sensors are getting more input right now, giving us touch less touch screens like this great project
This and a lot more like it are on the way to just underneath our screens soon

Yes Eyecon is a very good software for tracking it has unique tracking features that i'd like isadora to have one day.... like drawing lines in the image that is tracked and if body crosses the line this triggers what you want and/or moving along the lines plays midi notes or changes a send control value continuously in the direction of movement or send osc. Pretty awesome. In addition to that in a form you can also draw in a monitor of the tracked image eyecon detects the direction of the movement. And all of this can be combined with traditional blob stuff. AWESOME!!! I WANT THAT TOOO (software is pc only and written in Delphi.....)

I used EyeCon quite a lot during my university days. It's a great piece of software. You can do similar things in isadora but there are a few things that are unique.

Yes it is. Especially drawing lines in video space plus the movement direction detection. Very good. i'd love thins in Isadora. Then it would be the best video tracking software out.

Xtion pro works with ni-mate in osx at 60 fps (says the ni-mate guys, I don't have one and I can't test) This seems promising.

I am planning on buying an ASUS Xtion to use with Isadora and NiMate, but I cannot see any posts from people who have actually done this. Dose anyone have any recent experience or advice on this? Also, is it better to use the Kinect 1 device or the ASUS Xtion.

I played with ASUS Xtion a while back. I used the same software one would use for kinect one (openni, freenect). Hardware wise Xtion advantage is not using a separate power supply and a smaller physical size.
