IR - where to point the light??

Hi folks - a quick question about infrared. if i have an IR camera over the stage looking straight down, and a channel of lanterns with gels that will filter out everything but the IR wavelengths, do i point the lanterns at the dancers and off the floor, or at the floor and off the dancers?

I would light the floor as low as possible to get IR background where the dancers are like shadows.
