3D Ropes user file
-
Hi,
I have made a 3D Ropes user file. I was inspired by the demonstration presented by @Mark. There was mention of uploading files for sharing and potential discussion and feedback. Here are three scenes for anyone to download and take a look at. It is a locked file so I hope it displays OK. If you would like to explore the patch work please DM me for the pass code. One of the scenes uses a custom 3D model that I generated in Blender. There is also a 3D model of a soldier ant from a download site...
I was intrigued to look at the 'sensor feedback' provided by the 3D Ropes actor and in the first scene I attempt to use the feature as motion paths for 3d models automating their movement through space.
I was really impressed by the fluidity of the 3D Ropes as they responded en masse. I wanted to extend this by using it as a texture on a layered 3D model I put together in Blender.
The last scene is a bit of the 'out of control' approach suggested by @mark. I thought it was interesting to see it start to form what looks like swarms and flocks.
Here is the file 3DRopes-bonemap .zip
I don't know if anyone is going to be particularly interested, but if you have made any progress with any of the 3D actors I would be very open to sharing and discussion.
Kind Regards
Russell

Hi Russell,
I'd like to have a look inside your patch, please. I had an image in my head that I wanted to build with 3D Ropes, but could only get a maximum of 2 ropes to be generated by a single actor, so I built it with a load of actors, one per rope: Medusa.izz (its a bit like your third scene. Medusa is the Finnish word for jellyfish)
cheers,
john

look inside your patch
Hi John,
I have sent you the password. I think I remember seeing your patch before? or one you have shared that is something similar. You will see I have tried to solve that issue by separating the rope strands using the 'pt offset' parameters.
Kind Regards

i shared something similar using 3D particles and feedback. i like organic stuff. :)

@bonemap: I am interested to tinker with scene2 of this file. Thank you for the code.

Thank you for the code
HI Bill,
I sent you the password in the forum chat. If you want to see the structure of the 3DS files: temporarily set the 'draw' mode of one of the 3D Players to 'wireframe'.
Best Wishes

Hi,
There is a link to a demo patch at the bottom of this forum post where I have developed a rudimentary technique making use of the 3D Ropes module as a way to implement a dynamic motion path. This is actually a significant development inside Isadora for me, and may be of interest for any other animators, as I have also developed an understanding of a technique for animated 3D models using the 'groups' feature of Isadora 3D Model Particles. In this case a simplified walk cycle. So now, along with the walk cycle, I can produce a dynamic path for 3D models to 'walk' along - that is a different path each time. Thanks to @mark for unlocking the 3D Ropes feedback feature. In the attached demo file an animated walking ant 3DS file follows the dynamic 3D Ropes as a motion path. The file is locked with the same password as the previous file in this thread. Direct Message me using the forum chat feature if you want to look under the hood. It use 'Calc Angle' module to determine the models orientation to the line. And there are a few experimental concepts thrown in for good measure i.e. forcing some shadows and lighting. There appears to be default internal smoothing of the feedback output that does not have a calibration input so there was no way to conform the motion path to what the rope is actually doing. The rope therefore, provides a path that conforms to a kind of directional influence. It also required some mitigation to allow the model movement to extend the full length of the 'rope' path.
Kind Regards

@bonemap: Got it. Will be tinkering with it this week. We are having snow here for Easter Sunday!
