I'm exploring the simultaneous generation of text to screen and automated voice on Mac OS. I apologise if there is some really obvious way to do this, that I have missed, as I relatively new to Isadora.

At the moment the 'Trigger Text' and 'Text' actors will potentially send blocks of text to 'Speak Text' and 'Text Draw'. This will achieve simultaneous text to screen and voice, but in a limited way.

It doesn't allow more complex, temporally sequenced or line-by-line text output, in the way that the Text/ure actor does. But the Text/ure actor currently only sends a videostream with the text superimposed, which can't be input to the Speak Text actor.

It would really expand the text functionality of Isadora if the Text/ure actor could output it's text "as text", as well as text already embedded in video. So - i guess i'm requesting it.

Or waiting for more experienced users to tell me that what I want is somehow already possible...

I have a patch attached that may help.

        Typing and reading text.izz

this is a very elegant patch, but it's still a 'one-shot' block of text, because at the core is the 'Trigger Text' actor. The 'Text/ure' actor offers a more sophisticated set of possibilities because it distinguishes between numbered lines of text. So it is possible to use it as a kind of 'text sampler', sending out multiple trigger text outputs. To achieve this using the Trigger Text actor would mean 'loading' and triggering multiple actors, including empty actors to remove the text from the screen when the voice is not speaking.

I guess adding those characteristics to the 'Trigger Text' actor would be another way of beefing up Isadora's Text/Speech options.

A good way to illustrate what I'm after is to look at Matthew Ragan's nice text-shuffling patch here:

            https://matthewragan.com/2014/...

-and imagine that those text outputs were also triggering speech.

Well if you play a bit around with the "Text Chopper" you can do exactly what Matthew did.

              Projecting and reading word.izz

aha...now we're getting somewhere. Thanks a lot. I'll play with that and see where it takes me.

                nice one.

if you want truly powerful text manipulation  capabilities you may want to use Javascript.

JS will allow you to do 'anything' to your text string.. (outside of actual display settings.. font size etc..)

thanks. it's outside my current knowledge base, but that's definitely something to explore. Meanwhile Michel has shown me a few things to try with the functionality of the Text Chopper.

i'm really appreciating the comments and assistance from the team & the forum..:-)

I'm late to the party but you may also want to take a look at using the Data Array actor if you want to mess around with different "lines" of text. Mark did a Guru Session on it which you can find in our knowledgebase section: https://support.troikatronix.com/support/solutions/articles/13000075028-guru-session-3-data-manipulation-with-the-data-array-actor
