[ANSWERED] Kinect V2 on Mac M1 VS orbec astra ( and how to extend with usb to rj45
-
Hi,
I saw that Kinect 1 is not working on M1 mac ( but with rosetta )
so can we use Kinect V2 on M1 2022? did anyone try the comparative with orbec Astra?
@mark talked about this adapter to plug Kinect V2 to Mac, can we use chaine another one to access usb via network cable? like this way or even this one?
I'm using M1 skeleton recognition with cam but can't get the depth that I miss...Thanks

You can use it the same way as the Kinect V1, running Isadora in Rosetta emulation. The reason is that the OpenNI libraries used to interface the cameras require this intel emulation.

I did some tests on an M1 Max (Mac Studio) machine using Orbbec's Astra Camera last week. I can report that the OpenNi add-on worked in Rosetta mode for both depth camera and skeleton tracking. However, the OpenNi video and interface tended to freeze after a while requiring a restart of the Isadora app to relaunch the OpenNi add-on. I have to do some more stress testing to determine if using OpenNi is going to be viable on these machines.Best Wishes

An update to OpenNi testing on M1 Max chip.
I have tested these cameras: Kinect V1, Kinect V2, Orbbec Astra Pro, Orbbec Astra Mini. Running on Mac Studio M1 Max, Isadora 3.2.5 (rosetta). Mac OS Monterey 12.6.
I had huge issues with my Kinect v2...
Loss of depth image and tracking after 60 - 70 seconds, then unable to quit Isadora with the OpenNi module present in the Scene Editor. OpenNi unresponsive after relaunching the patch in Isadora app and OpenNi unresponsive in a new patch. After power down and power-up Kinect V2 becomes responsive again but for only a moment before loosing video and depth image. Restarting computer resets the depth and tracking image but for only a moment (60 - 70 sec approx.) For comparison also tried Kinect V2 on intel Mac running Isadora 3.2.5, OS 12.6 - had similar problems, it is now hard to say if the issue is with my camera!
Kinect V1, Orbbec Astra...
Recognised the camera straight up and operated as expected. Each camera ran uninterrupted for over 20 minutes. No additional USB extensions were used.Best Wishes

I thought I should add here, that I have tested on my M1 mac mini, with Kinect V2, and I have had it up and running for a full day (depth video, and body tracking) without issue. So I don't think there is anything inherently different about the Kinect V2 as far as how it performs with the OpenNi Tracker. Clearly, hardware can vary and testing is required with your specific hardware.

Thanks for that! I would say there may be some fault with my Kinect V2 device then.

@dusx I have been looking to figure out what driver people are using for the Kinect v2 on a mac studio. It seems like there isnt a specific thread related to this that is newer.

No additional drivers should be required. The OpenNI actors include the required components. Isadora must be run in Rosetta Mode, and the installation instructions for the plugins must be followed. I don't have a similar machine to you, but all works as expected on my M1 mac mini, and my Intel mac mini.
