      Dear community!

I recently ordered an Orbec Astra Pro (apparently it is an Astra Pro Plus) to replace my ageing Kinect v1.

I followed all  the instructions of the latest openNI-tracker readme, especially the one regarding the "masquerade.txt".

Unfortunately I am unable to have the camera being recognised by the openNI-Tracker.

The tracker does work perfectly with a Kinect v1 and the OBNiViewer tool provided by Orbbec's driver package is working with the Astra as well.

Anyone got any hints to share?

      All Best,

      Peter

The Orbbec Astra, as shown on this page on Orbbec's site, is the camera that is compatible with OpenNI Tracker.

From what you're saying, you have the Orbbec Astra Plus, as shown on this page, for which we do not claim compatibility.

Please contact Orbbec technical support and ask them if the Orbbec Astra Plus is completely backwards compatible with the Orbbec Astra, including the OpenNI driver orbbec.dll v2.3.0.15.

Please let us know what you find out.

        Sincerely,
        Mark

P.S. I kept researching this and found a couple of other things.

First, this line on the Astra Plus page: "Astra was developed to be highly compatible with existing OpenNI applications making the Astra, Astra Pro Plus, and Astra S ideal cameras for pre-existing apps that were built with OpenNI." So, it would seem they are claiming backwards compatibility. Since the depth resolution for both the Astra and Astra Plus are 640x480, I would think it would still work.

And yet, I also found a download "Orbbec SDK Beta for OpenNI2" which says "Supports Astra+ with other new products coming soon" which kind of implies that the Astra+ is NOT supported by OpenNI yet.

        Very confusing.

Again, please let me know their reply when you contact tech support.

            Dear Mark, Dear Community!

It seems, Orbbec  has updated their SDK and the driver you mentioned is not compatible with the newer cameras from the Astra range.

Their support suggested using the current SDK.

The complete Astra line, according to their website, supports OpenNI2 which still leaves me a little confused on why the ProPlus is not working.

In the meantime I also ordered a standard Astra and can confirm, that this model works fine with the OpenNI tracker, without an RGB image stream of course.

If I recall correctly you might be able to get the RGB stream in through Live Capture (like a normal webcam).
