Movie Players Locking Up
-
I've got a support ticket in — but thought I'd try the group as well since I load in tomorrow and open on Tuesday. Has anyone every encountered movie players that simply lock up and won't play anything?
some context: I'm currently building a Brady Bunch style video wall that was working really well for months. And then this week, it's started acting up. More info on what've been doing on this thread: https://community.troikatronix...
But suffice to say I've split the signal of a single camera to trick my computer into seeing two cameras that alternately capture 1 minute movies to create the impression of a seamless extended video delay cascading between the video monitors. It takes 24 minutes to populate the video wall with 3 minutes between each monitor. I do the video capture my MacbookPro M1 Max and have been sending a 3840x2160 NDI stage to 2 other computers to handle the outputs. The load has not been outlandish. and my memory has capped out at about 20GB even as it starts to freak out.
In fact, the live feed and the capture camera to movie actors continues to work great. I can see and hear the files if I watch them on quicktime from the captured folder. The problem has become playback. As the movie players cycle between the minute clips they start to seize up one by one until they won't play anything at all. Until all movie players seize up and won't play anything at all. At first toggling works a bit, but at a certain point the actor becomes as good as frozen. The stage does to. And yet the livestream and the capture continues no problem. When I save and close it doesn't crash.
I know I asking a lot of the machine, but it doesn't quite make sense that this is just starting now.
Anyway. Thanks for reading.

@joshuawg Only time I've had issues with movie players locking up was using H264 MPGS instead of HAPS. When using HAPS all my freezing issues went away. Probably not your issue but just throwing it out there.

@reload2024 Yeah -- I've been using AppleProRes — tried going to 422 instead. But since it's all live capture cam to movie, I can't really use hap, right?

Correct, Hap doesn't perform well for real-time compression.
Are Movie Players visibility being turned On/Off regularly or quickly? Or other inputs?
On Mac (Movie Players work slightly different on Mac and PC), you have some preferences that may help. You should try increasing the number of background movie players from the default of 4 to 6 (or more) for both QuickTime and AVFoundation. If something is occurring that is crashing the movie players, it may be useful to have additional instances ready to pick up the task.

@dusx Thanks! Gave it a try at 6 / 8 / and 11 — still crashing the movie players around 15 minutes into the cycle. I truly don't understand what changed.
