How many parallel 1080p25 movies with Geforce 1080 Ti or Vega 64?
-
Yes BUT; it's not just the GPU, you need a fast SSD drive; ideally Raid 0 ideally.
-
The internal SSD of the 15" Kabylake Macbook Pro Touch or the external Sandisk Extreme 900 SSD or Angelbird SSD2GO PKT would be fine, I suppose? What is the minimum data rate in MB/s it needs? Thanks!
-
@mrtzThis is pretty much the same as a single 4k movie, so I would say confidently yes, but a 1080ti in an egpu is a waste, even thunderbolt 3 is significantly slower than a pcie connection.
-
As even my new Kabylake 15 Macbook pro produces stutters with two full dh 25p movies (in prores 422 lt) i was thinking if buying an egpu in order ti be able to play 4 full hd 25p movies. so if the 1080 ti is ‚too good’ for egpu use do you think the new sonnet egpu 570 puck would be suitable for this?
thx,

@mrtz your macbook pro should be able to do this without too much trouble. Mark and the team have done quite a bit of testing of movie playback.
What version of Isadora are you using?
Are you doing anything else, any other software at the same time?
Do you have any other processing in your path?
Did you get the mac with a video card or the integrated only model. The integrated gfx chip on this laptop is ok, but not that great.
What are you outputting to and how are you connected?
If you want an egpu solution, I would buy the mac developer version https://developer.apple.com/de...
But, I would try a few other things, out of curiosity I would try high data rate h264 codec, it is also gpu accelerated and can be high quality, it is fine for playback, not as good if you want random access.

Okay, maybe I do not even need a eGPU then? I would like to be able to play 4 full hd movies without stuttering, however.
>What version of Isadora are you using?
2.5.2
>Are you doing anything else, any other software at the same time?
no

no

Radeon Pro 560 4GB, sytem settings ”energy set” to ”no automatic switch of the graphics modes”
>What are you outputting to and how are you connected?
two USB-C to HDMI converters, go to full hd projectors (1920 x 1080 Prores 422LT movies at 25 fps), projectors set to 50 Hz
settings in Isadora settings:
- Target frame rate: 50 fps (25 fps were stuttering even more)
- General service: 10x Per Frame (every 2 mS) do not quite understand this setting, however
- ”Disable Vertical Retrace Sync”: will try to turn this on, if it helps, but I do not understand yet the disadvantage of doing so.
>If you want an egpu solution, I would buy the mac developer version https://developer.apple.com/de...
I was thinking of the Sonnet Breakaway Puck RX 570 or the Breakaway Box 550 with a Radeon 56.
well, ideally I want to play 4 full hd movies. but if this should be perfectly fine with my macbook pro, i do not need the egpu …

really? I thought h264 is much more processorintensive than eg. Prores codecs? I am now working with ProRes LT422 .

Ok, your machine should be fine, I am guessing you are running high Sierra? I don't have any experience with it directly, other than stuff I was coding against the 10.12 SDK is not working.
I just did a test with 3 h264 HD 25p movies on my older macbook pro and it was fine, no stuttering, but I only had a single screen connected, I have the Nvidia Gt 750m with 2 gig of ram and generally a lesser machine. At this point, apart from some strange background process on your system, I would guess it is something with high Sierra, maybe someone has some experience.
H264 and proress are both quite efficient and hardware decoded with AV foundation (you can see what Isadora is using to play back on the movie player actor, there is an output labelled pb engine, just check that it is AV. The older quicktime playback engine was not very efficient.
And yes, you can also try HAP, but I would guess there is an underlying problem as your system should be able to handle this.
Oh, and try general service tasks at 20.
Maybe someone (or @mark) can advise about the state of High Sierra performance.

I just installed High Sierra yesterday and have not tested it since, so it was definitely not a High Sierra problem
I wonder: if you have 3 movies playing on 1 screen it is not the same amount of pixels than when it would be 3 1920x1080 projectors, right?
I am using AV foundation (that´s why HAP is not an option, as it is not supported by it)
I will try general service tasks at 20.
I have Adobe Creative Cloud installed on my macbook pro, but am using Isadora with a special user account, trying to deinstall and deactivate everything else. I also deactivated the automatic Creative Cloud menubar app via terminal.
Thanks so far,
Moritz

@michel: Yes, I treid HAP, but it performed substantially worse than Prores. I think that is because it is not supported by AV foundation?
-
Even though its not AV foundation it performs best on my system (MacBookPro, mid. 2015). Between in Izzy 2.6 Hap will play with AV foundation.
