Unable to start Isadora with NON "Pete" Free Frame plug-ins
-
I hope the collective wisdom of the Isadora world, and @Marc, can help me with this problem.
I have a large collection of non-"Pete's" Free Frame plug-ins that I've used in various shows over the years. I used to be able to use them in Isadora without issue. Starting sometime around September of 2011, with a new version, Isadora started crashing every time I started it. I remember emailing Mark then about the problem and solving it by stepping back a version to one I knew worked. Through trial and error, I have discovered that it is the non-Pete FF plug ins that cause this to happen. I've tried adding them back to the folder one at a time, but as soon as one of these is there, Isadora crashes on start up.
I wonder if anyone else had had a similar problem and what you were able to do about it?
Interestingly, I am unable to run Mark's edge blend patch posted here: http://troikatronix.com/troikatronixforum/discussion/723/edge-blend-calculator-patch#Item_5
Izzy crashes when I try to change scenes. I wonder if then problems are related?
I'm on Windows 7, 64 bit, always using the latest version of Isadora, but this has been going on for a long time. I wonder if it's since the change in file format? Maybe that's a hint, too.....
Many thanks,
Hugh

Dear Pete,
Contact me off list about this and send me one of the plugins that's causing the problem. I'll see what I can do.BTW, I'm quite sure the problem with the Edge Blend Calculator is not related.Best Wishes,Mark -
Thank you, Mark!

Dear Hugh,
I ran the added the two plugins you sent me to the FreeFrame folder. Unfortunately (for you) they work fine. Isadora boots, and the plugins process video correctly. This was under Windows 7 64-bit (though of course Isadora runs in 32 bit mode.)Are you still running Windows XP?Best Wishes,Mark -
Hi Mark,
No, I'm on Win7, 64 bit.
Are you running Izzy as an Administrator, or something? Or in an emulation mode?
Cheers,
Hugh

I don't know if this helps, but I've got a new laptop recently, same OS, and the problem hasn't changed. It is present on both machines.

Dear Hugh,
I am running Win 7, 64 bit as an administrator. I can't imagine that running as a non-administrator would cause a problem. But, when you run the Pete's Plugins installer, the permissions are going to be set correctly. I suppose it's possible if you just copied and pasted the plugin into the FreeFrame folder that the permissions could be fouled up.Maybe the permissions for the plugin make it unreadable by you. Can you check that? (Info here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727008.aspx)Another way to check: what happens if you right click the Isadora app and choose "Run as Administrator" -- does that change anything?Best Wishes,Mark -
Hi Mark,
I've tried your suggestions, including "run as admin", and setting all the permissions to full access and sharing both the FF folder and the individual files with all users. It's still crashing on start up. I sent the crash reports when they appeared each time.
Cheers,
Hugh

I have had similar problems in the past although I don't remember the details.
If you want to send me the files I can try to replicate the issue on my Win 7 64bit machine.Cheers

I have not problem loading them under the latest Isadora version.

Darn. Thanks for trying! No luck at my end at all. I've tried lots of different things, but Izzy still crashes when I start her up.
Clearly there has to be something different about my system, but I've tried it on 2 computers and it's the same problem. I'm going to try it on a third now.
Cheers,

Did you try removing all freeframes, starting isadora.
Closing it.
adding just one of the 'other' freeframes (try each desperately) and starting Isadora?
I have freeframes that crash izzy, but they are freeframe source plugins. (example is fugscope) -
Dear DusX,
I know that Hugh did that. The Pete's Plugins FreeFrame actors work fine, but as soon as he adds one of the others, it crashes.
Best,

Indeed I have. I also tried the third computer - same problem.
No idea what to try next. Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Hugh

i thought Freeframes did not work properly at all on 64 bit computers. They do not compile at all on ubuntu64 bit. just an idea

Interesting thought...
DusX tried Win7 64 and it worked for him. I know Mark is doing the same, although he's running it on a MAC, which could make a difference....

Regarding this comment
"i thought Freeframes did not work properly at all on 64 bit computers."Isadora is a 32 bit app, as are the FreeFrame plugins that run under it's control. The run in 32 bit mode on 64 bit Windows.Best Wishes,Mark -
I have put all my freeframe files into my director (I also have many),
I can report that any freeframe source files (like fugscope) will crash Isadora on load.
If I remove the source FF then Isadora loads and
I receive reports of a number of them having ID conflicts.
Once open my freeframes work, other than a few having bad video outputs (must be mixed in Isadora to show video) things are as expected. What exact version are you running?. I have most installed on my machine, so I can test the version if not the latest release.

Your freeframes are also working for me in f24 (previous test were latest release)

Hi DusX,
Thanks for your continued help!
I haven't got f24 anymore so I'll have to download that and try it.
I'm using 1.3.1 f03, but this has been going on for many versions before that! I'm guessing well before f24 (and on 3 or 4 different computers, too!). Around September 2011, I believe.
Cheers,
Hugh
