[ANSWERED] M1 emulation mode v Intel Mac
-
Hello all, I hoped to find this kind of topic already discussed but I can't so posting new.
I need to buy a computer for a temporary interactive installation, and I want to use 2 projectors showing interactive video graphics with a camera as input. Had Isadora been running natively on M1 chips, a new Mac mini would seem to be a no brainer at £699, but assuming that a new release is not imminent I have a dilemma.
For that kind of budget or a bit more, do you think I'd get better results (ie. smoother, more responsive video) using the M1 Mini in emulation mode, or using a used/refurbished Intel Mac, say i7 with AMD graphics or similar?
Any thoughts much appreciated! -
Hi there Kit,
Welcome to the Isadora community forum, glad to have you here!
Like we described before; the M1 Mini has a limit on the number of displays that it can output. Some clever Isadora users have found a way to get up to 3 Displays with some external hardware.
We are working hard on a new version of Isadora that runs natively on M1 based Mini's. I sadly can't release any date's since we are still bug testing / verifying the install before we make this public.

@juriaan Thanks for responding. This is not about me being impatient for a release of Isadora that runs natively on M1, I understand you can't give a time on that at this stage. My question is about what performance I can expect in emulation mode, compared with running on an intel Mac.

We're now up to 5 :) Two Puggable boxes (4 outputs via your choice of HDMI or DP between them) plus the built in ones. In theory you might even be able to get to six, if you move one of the Plugables to USB-A and then put a standard DP adapter on the available USB-C.

@liminal_andy I'm finally having luck getting more displays on an M1 Mac mini using Displaylink USB to HDMI dongles and the Displaylink Manager driver: https://support.displaylink.co...
Stay away from the J5Create driver - it does bad things.

@eamonn Same!
