eGPU setup for starter
-
A total beginner on Isadora, I'm the president and tech generalist of a private small ballet school, working as volunteering activity (the choreographer and teacher is my wife, with specialization at Vaganova school in choreography and character dance).
During last years I get to use Millumin to just couple music and images in a sequence, but being my full time job related to realtime 3d it's years I'm willing to get to next level.
Still need to meet the request of the choreographer that is all than passionate in tech.
So the start will be probably just add some subtle effect on images, but I'm eager in pushing trough i.e. body tracking to follow performers.
All this using current available hardware, so that wanted to ask if might sense just to start with
- Option 1: my wife MacBook Pro 13" 2019 four TB3 ports, with 8GB not upgradeable RAM and i5 quad core CPU
- Option 2: my business laptop Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga with 8GB not upgradeable RAM, i5-8350U quad core, 1 TB3 port, Win 11
Both of them can pair a Cooler Master Eg200 eGPU case with RX 580 GPU, on the Win laptop also a GTX 1070.
The projection will be made on 720p level projectors.

Hi there!
Welcome to the Isadora community forum.Isadora 3.x does not support eGPU, and we also don't have any active plans for this major release to support eGPUs.
Regarding your original question; the systems are basically identical to each other. We are doing our final verifying / testing of Windows 11. So personally I would just pick the one that you feel most comfortable with. The 4 TB3 ports are nice to add additional ports if you are in an multi projector environment / want to play with Live cams / etc.
Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Reading on the forum I've seen various users with eGPU setup, so will try how is working.
Looking also the users seems to me many are working on Mac, my only concern is the availability of the laptop for my testing.
I suppose a project made on Windows can be later ported to Mac?

Yup! An project made on Mac can be opened on Windows and vice versa.
There are an few actors that are Mac exclusive like the AU actors, so try to avoid those if possible if you wish to open your project on Windows.
And of course both computers need to have the same or higher version of Isadora. You can't open an Isadora 3.2.1 document on Izzy 3.1

We actually do already officially support Windows 11. From the Isadora 3 System Requirements article: "Isadora 3 is supported on macOS 10.14 (Mojave) through macOS 12 (Monterey) with a 64-bit Intel or Apple silicon (ARM/M1) processor, and on a 64-bit version of Windows 10 through 11 with an Intel or AMD processor." and "Window 11 is supported with Isadora 3.1.1 and later."

Yes, by "unsupported" we don't mean you can't try it to see how it works, we just mean that we do not have the resources to extensively test Isadora with eGPUs so we can't promise that Isadora will work when using an eGPU. It's "unsupported" because we can't provide technical support for eGPU-related problems.

Yes, if memory serves, over half our userbase is working on macOS, but it's also very common for experienced users of the software to work with Isadora on both macOS and Windows.
