Nice interactive wave displacement

I need to nicely displace the image on the screen as the actor passes by without using any tracking (triggered by hand). There is a Displace actor that can in principle do that, but it requires a lot of fiddling with the displace source, and if the conditions change, the displacement video source has to be readjusted (re-rendered) -- not very practical in the rehearsal room. Are there any better approaches, something along procedural displace source, that I could easily tune -- the direction, intensity, dynamics of the wave displacement?

Looking at the QC Mesh wave actor -– by the name of it one would think it may be relevant to procedurally producing a wave distortion source for the Displace actor. However, changing its input values does not produce any effect, except the amplitude: all I am seeing is a nice 3d ball.
Does anybody know how to use QC Wave Mesh?Thanks.--8
