One Isadora's most innovative (and enthusiastic users) is the Associate Professor of Dance/Theatre Design and Production at the University of Maryland, Jared Mezzocchi.

During the month of August he spearheaded the creation of numerous short experiments using Zoom, Isadora, and other tools that explored the possibilities of remote performance. In these experiments you'll see that he was not only able to bring together performers in remote locations, but to use Isadora to manipulate the video from those remote sources in groundbreaking ways. Moreover, he even developed a method to allow a Stage Manager in a remote location call cues!

We are excited to share a list of all his Zoom/Isadora experiments below.

Some of you are going to immediately ask: "how did he do that?" or "Is there an example patch?" Jared didn't go into those sorts of details whilst creating these little playgrounds. But it's clear that following up on his ideas and showing you ho to accomplish some of the techniques he explored would benefit the entire community.

So, in our next, live "guru" session, we'll go one-on-one with Jared so that you can ask questions about how he accomplished these amazing feats. Based on your questions during that live session, we'll post a make "how to" posts in the forum  that will help you accomplish similar real-time feats. We are working with Jared to arrange the date for this special guru session, and will let you know as soon as it is set.

In the meantime, we've accumulated all of his experiments here for you to see. They are on Facebook, but the posts are public so you don't need a Facebook account to view them.

Apparently, a multi-institution push led by Yale University has resulting in Zoom offering a "high quality" audio mode in version 5.2.2.

This CDM article by Peter Kirn tells you how to take advantage of this new feature which may be important to Isadora users.

A user over on the Facebook Group posted a video of actors sitting on a couch in front of a screen, with a projection of their words seemingly falling from the sky as they were spoken. As many of the comments identified, an easy way to get this effect accomplished in Isadora is to prebake the asset or even draw the words with Text Draw individually because, in scripted performance, the language (theoretically) is always the same. However, it got my wheels turning: is there a way to do this live, with improvised language? Turns out the answer is: yes!

There is a well-known speech recognition library for python, and I've become comfortable programming OSC into python scripts over the years, so I figured there would be a way to combine them to make it happen. Turns out, the folks over at Programming for People beat me to it, as they put out a YouTube tutorial of programming the functions a few years ago and sell a package of the source code and a Max interface for a few dollars on their website. I purchased the source code and began to tinker as it needed some updates to be compatible with current python versions, etc. I received a friendly email from the developer and after a brief exchange, we decided that I can redistribute my fork of their work free of charge, though I would encourage those of you who may end up using this to shoot a few dollars over their way in good will.

As a result, here is OSCTranscribe! For those of you who want to tinker with the source code, you can follow that link to the git repository where I have the program hosted. Otherwise, you can grab the release for Windows 10 here.

When you run the program, it will print a list of all available audio devices it can bind to, and you just select the one you want to use. Then, you select the OSC network settings (defaults will be compatible with Isadora). Next, you use Isadora to send the following OSC commands via whatever triggers you want:

      OSC API for Controlling OSCTranscribe:

/OSCTranscribe/calibrate {int thresh}: Setup, establishes the amount of quite space before processing

/OSCTranscribe/startListening: Setup, begins listening to the mic and sending to the learning system

/OSCTranscribe/stopListening: Stops listening to the mic and stops sending to the learning system

By default, you send these commands to port 7070. Then, you should listen for the following OSC message:

/OSCTranscribe/data {string text}: The words recognized from the audio stream in between pauses

Now, Isadora's OSC Multi Listener, set to Text mode, will deliver the spoken words as Text for you to pass to Text draws, formatters, Javascript, etc.

      Here's a quick demo:

The recognition from the speech API is pretty good! Visually, a lot more tinkering could be done within Isadora to make this look more pleasing, but I will leave that to all of you to try out. Let me know what you think :)

We have updated our forum software to NodeBB 1.17.2. Hopefully this will solve a few long standing issues with the caches and such, which some of you have reported.

Please let us know if you experience any surprises or difficulties.

Another aspect of UDP/OSC, which I've not seen in the other discriptions, is the easy ability for broadcasting messages.
Instead of sending the OSC command to a specific IP address, one can often use the networks broadcast address.

As for the Broadcast term, it describes the process of broadcasting packets to an entire subnet. (e.g: 192.168.1.001 to 192.168.1.254). As you see, the Address 192.168.1.255 here is spared out. This is the broadcast address of the used subnet. If you put this IP as the OSC recievers address, the messages will be fired to all IP Adresses e.g. devices in the network. This makes it easy to trigger multiple devices, with only one OSC message and therefore in Izzy, only one OSC send actor.

Isadora within the public education !!
It is with great joy that I share with you that the Isadora Latin Network  began a series of trainings for art teachers within the public educational system. Super excited and concentrated testing version 3.1 of Isadora with the computers provided by the government of its official program that aims to reduce the digital gap. It is a first step of many others to come. Thanks Mark Coniglio and his team for their constant support of this Network.

It's not strictly Isadora-related, but I've been looking for a tool that lets you make equipment system-flow diagrams like the one in this article, and someone from Alex Lindsay's Office Hours (professional AV online community) recently pointed me to this one which looks fantastic: https://h2rgear.com/

I always try to make these for my projects because it keeps everything clear and lets you know what you are missing and need to rent/buy/source.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else was tired of the tedium of using Vectorworks (overcomplicated for simple things), napkin drawings (not good enough), or Google Drawings (not designed for this purpose really).

      Best wishes,

      Woland

      Dear All,

In researching the issue of displays moving themselves into different positions on Windows, I came across what seems like a really useful piece of software called UltraMon. For example, it allows you to save profiles when using multiple displays that can be recalled to set the arrangement, mirroring, scaling, etc.

Definitely worth checking out if you're a Windows user and need to frequently wrangle multiple displays.
